Why didn't Potter's lawyer cross examine the witnesses? Why would anyone believe Tom's story and how do we know that Tom is growing up?
Muff's lawyer doesn't cross-examine the witnesses because he is preparing to call Tom to the witness stand. We know that Tom is growing up because he had previously done anything to get out of telling the authorities what he knew. Tom had gone a long period of time, but had only lately begun to feel guilty about allowing Muff to go on trial for something he hadn't done. Tom's tale was easily believed because of Injun Joe's hasty exit from the courtroom..... his actions spoke for themselves.
