Superstitions often help people understand things for which they have no other explanation. While they are sometimes ridiculous, they do often keep people safe from unknowingly doing something stupid. For example, thinking that a fearful creature might live in a river might keep one from swimming in that river with its currents or its dangerous denizens of that river.
