Basically everybody thinks that the boys are dead. They had witnessed the ferry boat searching for them and many people's genuine sorrow over their perceived demise. Internally the boys felt pretty guilty that so much trouble was spent looking for them. They feel both happy and sad that people, like Aunt Polly, were actually distraught. Coming out might mean punishment but staying “dead” would be harmful to everyone. They even witness their own funerals. One can understand the conflicts one might feel there!
