What punishment does Aunt Polly think up for Tom? Why is he being punished? Do you think he deserves to be punished?

Tom is being punished for his behavior.... namely cutting school, sneaking into the jam closet, and lying to his aunt. As a punishment, Aunt Polly makes him whitewash the fence. And yes.... I believe a punishment is in order.
