Why did Becky throw away Tom's door knob?

She actually leaves it on his desk. After Tom proposed to Becky and gave her the doorknob, he immediately let slip that he'd been engaged to Amy. Beck, of course cries and believes that Tom is still in love.............. and she leaves the doorknob, a token of his love behind.
