Why is Tom angry with the judge for dying when he does?

Tom joined a band called the "Cadets of Temperance", a group that was highly respectable. Tom found "respectability" difficult to handle and didn't think he would make it until the Fourth of July celebration. He did, however, think he could keep his promises long enough to appear in Judge Frazer's funeral procession. Unfortunately for Tom, word got out that the judge wouldn't die and was on the mend, thus, Tom quit the group. Judge Frazer died the same evening.
