Why Tom contemplates Ben after Ben offers his invitation

I suppose Tom is contemplating just how much he is learning about human nature. Instead of harassing Tom over painting the fence, he offers his help. Ben did not ant to be left out of what other boys were doing. His teasing fell on deaf ears until Ben perceived the task as being "fun".
