The desert is place of learning from yourself and others. In the Bible, the nation of Israel was thought by God in the desert, and from the desert they learned who they are and what they will be. With Santiago, it's the same. In the beginning of the novel, Santiago was a hard hearted sheperd who trusted no one and did nothing. Now through his journey, he is the desert and that's where his heart is most content. The desert symbolized a tribulation we go through life to conquer what is our- Happiness.
