How would you describe the book The Alchemist?

I think this asks for your description rather than mine. Keep in mind that the Alchemist is part of a genre called magic realism. It straddles the worlds of reality and the fantastic. There is always a surreal dreamlike sensibility to it that examines the bigger questions of life.
