The Alchemist (Coelho)

spititual journey or bildungsroman

is the alchemist in any way a bildungsroman, and if so how? I think that through sacrifice he keeps growing as a character, but I am not sure that it results in a truly different character afterwards? does that make sense?

Well, I think that answer is all in how we look at the novel and the character. I see the alchemist as a bildungsroman. I think the author's intent is to define this genre, in that our main character experiences immense self development.
