the novel opens with santiago thinking about his sheep. what does he notice about their existence? how might the sheep symbolize the way people live their lives?

Santiago notices that his sheep don't have to make decisions, and that he, himself, meets all of their needs. This realization causes discontent in Santiago, and he decides he wants more. The sheep represent new paths to be taken..... forging new paths, not safe paths.
