What are the diferent between Santiago (The Alchimist) & Chance (Bieng There))

I remember seeing the Peter Sellers movie when I was a kid. I think there is an innocence with both characters. Both Chance and Santiago are thrust into an alien world where they must navigate through people and circumstances that can mislead them. I think Chance has a bit more naivety going than Santiago. Chance spent his whole life watching TV in his master's mansion. At least Santiago got to herd sheep and converse with people. Both characters use clues to distinguish the real from the perceived real. There is much to interpret for them and they often take it all in like a child learning its own consciousness.
