As they cross the desert, the alchemist explains the nature of alchemy to Santiago. He does not tell him how to transmute one material into another, but rather, he teaches Santiago the symbolism of the lead and the gold. The lead is the soul, and the gold is the soul’s potential. Once the soul reaches its fullest potential, it is transmuted into something infinitely valuable. This is the philosophy of spiritual alchemy.
