The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man

How does this sentence develop the narrator as a character?

” I know that I am playing with fire, and I feel that through which accompanies them that most fascinating past time; and, back of it all, I think I finally sort of savage and diabolical desire to gather up all the little shed cities of my life, entering them into a practical joke on society”

I know that I am playing with fire, and I feel the thrill which accompanies that most fascinating pastime; and, back of it all, I think I find a sort of savage and diabolical desire to gather up all the little tragedies of my life, and turn them into a practical joke on society.

In contect, this alludes to the narrator's desire to flout convention and get back at those who've impeded and negatively impacted his life. He has a certain amount of power within his hands, and he intends to use it not only to his own advantage, but also to the disadvantage of those who are unaware of his secret.
