Why did malcolm x begin to use a dictionary?

Malcolm X had only read books with few words in it.

“Every book I picked up had few sentences which didn’t contain anywhere from one to nearly all of the words that might have been in Chinese”.

He got himself a dictionary and began the arduous task of copying every entry.
