What do you suppose are the two contradictory impulses that are compelling Edna? How is this related to the idea of "a light which, showing the way, forbids it."

This is a difficult question. In my opinion, Edna is torn between her comfortable, leisure life and her desire for independence. Edna's husband is unhappy with her neglect of house and home.... her detachment from their children. Edna is fighting against her husband's expectations and acting in rebellion. She wants to experience the forbidden... to push the envelope.... to do as she wishes without the frowns and disapproval. We might compare her to a rebellious teenager.
