The Bean Trees
What did Taylor think about Arizona when she first drove into the state ?
Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Taylor is enthralled by the topography of the state and surreal landscape it creates.
"It was a kind of forest, except that in place of trees there were all these puffy-looking rocks shaped like roundish animals and roundish people. Rocks stacked on top of one another like piles of copulating potato bugs. Wherever the sun hit them, they turned pink. The whole scene looked too goofy to be real." We whizzed by a roadside sign on which I could make out a dinosaur. I wondered if it told what kind of rocks they were, or if it was saying they were actually pertrified dinosaur turds. I was laughing my head off........ whether my car conked out or not, I made up my mind to live in Arizona."
