Why does Esperanza remind Taylor of turtle

When Esperanza had seen Turtle and Dwayne Ray, she nearly collapsed in the car, and she could not take her eyes off of Turtle. Eventually Taylor asks Estevan if Esperanza is okay, and he replies that Turtle looks like a child they had known in Guatemala.
