The Bet is a short-story by Anton Chekov. The primary conflict driving the narrative is good, old-fashioned man-versus-man in the form of the competition of banker-versus-lawyer. Chekhov uses the beginning of the story to foreshadow the end, and a second flashback serves to reveal the conditions under which the lawyer has been living as a prisoner also acts to foreshadow the eventual climactic events.
