Don't all similes use like or as?

Under Bible Metaphors, this passage was used as an illustration:

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.”

This comparison becomes a simile loaded with meaning. The connotation of treasure is that heaven is worth the labor of seeking its location while the fact that it lies hidden contains undertones of becoming available to anyone seeking its discovery.

Isn't this a simile?

I don't think using like or as is necessary to contrast ideas although you might speculate under the example you give. The below is from Wiki grammar. Personally I would not call your example a simile but you might investigate further.

Although similes and metaphors are similar, similes explicitly use connecting words (such as like, as, so, than, or various verbs such as resemble), though these specific words are not always necessary.

It most cases and how simile is taught in schools is that using LIKE OR AS is showing a simile. This is a way to memorize and differ simile and metaphor from each other.
