From the text we can infer that Death found the Fuhrer to be something of a joke. The children saluted out of necessity..... it was meaningless.

“Mixed candy again?” She schmunzeled, to which they nodded. The money splashed the counter and Frau Diller’s smile fell slightly ajar.
