who is max asking please please to? why might he be pleading to someone who isnt even in the same room as him?

Max is speaking to Hans, although he hasn't yet met him.
"He was speaking to a man he'd never met. As well as a few other important details, he knew the man's name. Hans Hubermann. (Page 141)
Max is hoping this man, a friend of his fathers, will give him sanctuary and keep him hidden.
