Both Hans and Max Vandenburg experience extreme guilt; why do they feel this guilt and what does each character do with it?

Max is wracked with anguish and guilt over leaving his family to save himself. Max befriends Liesel and channels his energy towards his artistic endeavours like writing the "stand overman". Hans takes Max in over the guilt that Max's father Erik gave his life for him.
