During the chapters leading up to the Joy of Cigarettes, several things have brought Liesel happiness and i can't figure out what they are

Hans has brought Liesel comfort and happiness.... Rudy has given her friendship..... books have given her the ability to escape, writing, the ability to commemorate, Max has given her friendship and trust..... he has given her stories. All of these things have brought a lonely, little girl happiness.
