Rudy would do most anything for Liesel. He would even jump into a freezing river.
A book floated down the Amper River. A boy jumped in, caught up to it, and held it in his right hand. He grinned. He stood waist-deep in the icy, Decemberish water. “How about a kiss, Saumensch?” he said.”
Here Rudy gallantly proves his love for Liesel by rescuing her book from the freezing cold river. Apparently he thought he deserved their first kiss over that! Rudy constantly wanted to be with Liesel. When he could not, he felt cheated and indignant,
"As long as both she and Rudy lived, she would never kiss that miserable, filthy Saukerl."
The irony is of course that Liesel does kiss Rudy but only after he is dead. Liesel has such complicated emotions over Rudy. We get the feeling that, at times, she protests a little too much (like this quote) for her not to have strong feelings for him.
