Molching, Germany is a poor town outside of Munich. Any other location wouldn't have told the same story. Germany is on the brink of war, the Jews are just coming under scrutiny...... their shops closing down, arrests, and people disappearing. Molching is a poor area, its populace is made up of farmers, laborers, and members of the Nazi party. The town, and the antagonism within the town, make it a dangerous place to live. Its citizens are nervous.... antagonistic, and most of all unsure.
As the narrator, Death sets the tone. From the beginning, we know it isn't going to be a happy story. Liesel's character provides Death with a bit of levity..... unfortunately, each time he sees her she is devastated by grief.
