How does the nature of what Liesel steals, change the connotation of the word thief

Liesel steals books, but the books she has stolen, along with the words they hold, have already been stolen by Hitler.... she simply steals them back. Hitler stole many lives, and he stole many of the words that were meant to honor and remember them. In her own way, Liesel kept them alive.
