We really don’t know much about Werner other than he was close to liesel. His death on the train affected her in profound ways that don’t manifest themselves until later on in the book. Liesel is haunted by the memory of Werner and consistently experiences nightmares about his death for months after arriving in Molching. At one point, Liesel thinks to herself that in her mind, Werner will be six years old forever. I really don’t think there is any more significance to him other than he was a part of her torn away. There would have been much unfinished and unsaid moments between the two siblings. I think that’s why his memory constantly haunts her.
