How is Liesel couragous when it comes to Max related events?

She helps Max hide in the Hubermans' basement. She brings Max back to life after his sickness. Liesel reads to him, confesses to him and really protects him right through the book. Any contact with Max would mean her death, yet Max , the Jew in the basement, becomes a focal point in her life.
