One external conflict would be Max hiding out with the Hubermanns. His hiding in their basement goes directly against what society deems appropriate and could get the family into a lot of trouble..... it could get the killed. So, in this conflict we have the Hubermanns as the protagonists in direct conflict with the Nazis.
