The Book Thief
To what extent do we see the ugliness and beauty of humans in The Book Thief?
Death states, "I'm always finding humans at their best and worst. I see their ugly and beauty and I wonder how the same thing can be both.

Certainly the beauty can be seen in characters like Hans Hubermann. He is kind, caring, courageous....Many of the people closely associated with Liesel have similar beauty in them. Consider Max, Rudy, and Liesel herself. The ugliness is really personified in the Nazi soldiers and the ideology of Hitler that infects people like a disease.
