Liesel is very young, and her own suffering is compounded by the suffering of the people around her. She is alone, and yet she finds love in the home of her foster parents. She learns about fear due to Max's presence in Hans and Rosa's home, and she sees the businesses, homes, and people in her neighbohood disappear. Her courage is undeniable, and for every new thing she experiences as an individual, she attains one more way in which to help those in need. Liesel learns to channel her fear, as well as her sorrow...... she also learns how to keep on living.
