Liesel is 10 years old when we meet her in 1939. There is no exact day given for her birthday but we can assume it was in 1929. If there is a love interest it would be Rudy Steiner. The romance angle is not played up in the book but rather vaguely alluded to in the latter sections. Liesel's original home town is never stated.
