What is the rising conflict throughout the entire book?

There are a few rising conflicts. There is Hans's relationship with the Nazi party. He is always in danger of being persecuted. There is the hiding of Max in the basement. Of course there is Death's, the narrator, conflicting attitudes about human nature that pervade the book. Oh, we also keep waiting for Liesel to kiss Rudy.
