The area serves as a reminder to how Jews were stripped of their businesses and their identities by the Nazis. When Rudy is giving Liesel a tour of the neighborhood on the way to school, they pass the "road of yellow stars" that was a road of Jewish business's that had been abandoned, and all had a yellow Star of David painted on them.
