What is ugly and beautiful about Liesel?
Death talks about how he can see the ugly and beautiful in humans and wonders how the same thing can be both?

Liesel is a tough little girl; she can be rude, mean, a bit spiteful, and often thinks badly of the other characters (this doesn't mean some didn't deserve her anger. None-the-less, it's the tough exterior and inner vulnerability that make her so lovable. Liesel's beauty can be found in that same toughness.... her desire to survive, and the love she feels for her new family. She is honest, loyal, and willing to put herself on the line when she feels deeply about something. I personally don't see any ugliness in her character, but she certainly is beautiful.
