THere are so many but I'd have to go with the protagonist Lisiel. She defies all expectations of a young German girl during this time. From teaching herself to read and write to stealing books that could get her killed to becoming a big part of Max and the Huberman's lives, Liesel never ceases to impress. Even death himself is impressed with her courage.
