who is max and what is one good and bad thing he did

A 23-year-old Jew who hides from the Nazis in the Hermann’s' basement. Max was a fist-fighter growing up, and as a teenager he resolves not to die without a fight. One bad thing Max feels guilt about is abandoning his family to save himself. Max however does many more positive things than negative. Max does not like hiding in Hans's basement; he wants to fight. He is kind and gentle. Eventually despite the threat of being caught, Max leaves the safety of the basement. He does not wish to put Liesel, Hans or Rosa in any more danger.
