Why is the Nazi party suspicious of Hans hubermann? What did he do to help the Jewish people?

When Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany in 1933, Hans decides not to join the Nazi Party. This was suspicious in itself but after all, "A Jew had once saved his life and he could not forget that." Hans also paints over anti-semitic graffiti and drops bread for Jews.
