Why was death mostly watchin Liesel instead of other people?

Death has seen a lot of people and a lot of hardship. He finds Liesel and the people in her life to be survivors. Death is impressed with her: as far as he is impressed with humans. He (if death is a he) finds Liesel courageous in the face of Man's inhumanity. He does not want to take her but knows that he will have little choice in the matter.
