In the book Shmuel draws David star and Bruno draws swastika and says "I've never got a band." Bruno wanted to get a swastika armband?Why?

Shmuel must wear his armband that proclaims him as one of the Jews. The Nazi's...... Bruno's father, and the other soldiers, wear swastikas. Thus, Bruno, as a German, says he never received his armband.
