It is true that Bruno had no playmates at the concentration camp, but yes, he genuinely liked Shmuel. Bruno took a chance of getting into trouble with his father everytime he approached the fence, but he continued to go. Bruno enjoyed Shmuel's company and was particularly happy when he came to work inside his home. The fact that Bruno was too young to understand why he wasn't supposed to associate with Shmuel allowed him to see beyond the fact he was a Jew and forge a friendship. Bruno approached Shmuel out of curiosity and lonliness, but he continued to visit him knowing that he'd get into trouble because he like him.
