Kotler is embarrassed by his father's actions and the move he made from his mother country. The suspicion cast by his father's actions leave him open to criticism, which is exactly what Bruno's father accomplishes in this scene. Bruno's father humiliates and chastises Kotler by bringing up his father's dessertion of the Reich.
