why Shmuel asked Bruno if he can speak in Polish ? They both knew German so why Shmuel asked Bruno about Polish ?

The boys are both very young. Shmuel is unaware that Berlin is even in Germany, and Bruno knows nothing more. The question is based upon curiosity more than anything else. Shmuel likely believes that since he speaks two languages, so should Bruno.
