why did mother have an afair with kotler and why did she turn to achahole.?

Mother was unhappy with her life, her husband's assignment at Auschwitz, having to leave her home, and living with the horrors of Auschwitz on a daily basis. We are never directly told that she disagreed with what happened there, but I believe her feelings were apparent in her subsequent affair and use of alcohol.
