Why do you think Bruno and Shmuel’s friendship was able to survive Bruno’s betrayal?

In my opinion, Bruno's actions were similar to the many actions of people who were afraid to stand up and right a wrong. I believe that Shmuel understood Bruno's fear, as well as his feelings. Shmuel, himself, had been and was exposed to that very kind of fear on a daily basis.
