The Boys in the Boat

The Boys in the Boat

in what ways are the specifics of rowing-the technique, the boats, the teamwork required-metaphors for what the hours, particularly joe, learn about life and friendship over the course of the novel?

In Chapter Twelve, Joe talks with George Pocock, a shell builder. During their conversation, George compares the passion some athletes have for rowing with religious devotion. This metaphorical comparison is important because it highlights the idea that many people in the 20th century were obsessed with the sport. It also shows with how much respect some were treating the sport and the lengths to which they were willing to go to participate in it.
