Brown uses the color grey extensively to portray a dismal picture of Seattle during The skies are grey, the weather is depressing, jobs are few, and the citizens of the city were struggling to survive. These images help the reader understand both the condition and mood of the city, as well as the circumstances Joe struggles with on a daily basis.
