Mrs. Weera’s no-nonsense, resilient attitude proves indispensable to the family. She immediately sees the state the household and its members are in and then takes action, whipping Parvana’s family into shape. The fifth chapter ends on an ominous note of foreshadowing: while Mrs. Weera and Mother discuss plans, Parvana overhears them deciding they’ll “have to think of something else.”
