Are men and women equal in Chaucer tales ?

At the time Chaucer wrote "The Canterbury Tales," women did not enjoy equality with men. In Chaucer's tales, the women are portrayed in a variety of different ways. The woman in the Knight's Tale is naive..... completely innocent. She lives a life of leisure and has been protected from outside influences. She adheres to the wishes of her family and has no control over her future..... she is typical of the period.

The "Wife of Bath" is tough...... after five husbands, she knows what she needs to do to have control over her own life. In her view, a woman should have a vote in her own home..... even control.

People see the Knight's Tale as a sexist outlook, whereas, the Wife of Bath is seen as a modern woman.
